I remember once while having dinner at the home of a Mennonite missionary and I asked him about his experiences in Africa, specifically Nigeria. The frustration in his reply was obvious as he said "I don't understand it! We go over there, taking food, medicine, tools and Bibles. We build churches and schools for them. They welcome us and many are converted. Yet within two years after we leave to let them grow on their own they are eating each other again." He then thumped his fist on the dinner table and exclaimed "What kind of person would eat his neighbor?"

I felt my input would not be well received so I changed the subject to the relative merits of John Deere versus International Harvester tractors.
