I pay for the Washington Post for the access to their work and to support a great paper. I pay for the Guardian and my hometown rag just to support them.
If I were a rich man I would subscribe to every legit paper and news magazine out there, just to support them. Access would be a nice side benefit.
If you looked at my motivation as a value proposition, (pains/gains solved by a subscription) my first problem (pain) I pay to have solved is access to the WaPo, and supporting them is just nice to have (gain).
The second and all subsequent subscriptions “solve” my belief that journalism needs support or it will die, and we all need to chip in as much as we can. The access is just nice to have.
