I went to BCT in 1973. All of our DIs with the exception of mine had probably been back from Viet Nam long enough for a good leave and DI School. (Mine had never left the US) We had one that manhandled a soldier and he was removed from our unit and assigned to the unit next door. All of our DIs were tough but fair. Over a twenty year career I saw many DIs taken down for doing stupid s***. And the only ones I knew that volunteered to be DIs we power hungry and crashed and burned shortly after going on the trail. I know there are far more great DIs than bad ones but like all bad apples they taint the entire barrel. That said I cannot think of any good reason for the things that this clown did to his recruits. The only person that benefited from this behavior was him and now he has to pay the piper for the dance. There is no training value in abusing recruits. Good tough training will weed out the weak. He will be treated better in jail than he treated his charges and that is truly unfortunate.
