And yet there are good things happening :

1. Trump won. And he won with the help of Southern votes (except Virginia), and with policies and elements drawn from the Southern populist tradition.

2. Although the Left has made terrific strides in rewriting Confederate history, many people around the world still sympathize with the Confederate cause -- especially in the case of peoples struggling for their own identity and independence. Confederate flags flew in Berlin when the Wall came down. They fly in Northern Ireland. Even some Northerners fly the Confederate flag.

3. The Southern tradition is much greater than the South's four-year fight for independence. It is 400 years old. Even if all Confederate monuments and symbols are outlawed, our traditions and identity remain.

4. The "Take 'Em Down NOLA" group is calling for removal of George Washington's statue in New Orleans, because George was a "slave master." Washington was of course as Southern as Robert E. Lee. But here our enemies may have gone too far -- most Americans will draw the line at Washington, Jefferson, Madison, the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution (because they were products of Southern genius, too), and other non-Confederate Southern founders and heroes.

5. Secession is back on the menu. Even in places like California. And we have the example of sanctuary cities and sanctuary States that practice nullification of Federal immigration laws.

6. The Federal courts have resurrected the Tenth Amendment in their haste to overthrow Trump's EO cutting Federal funding to sanctuary cities.

So be of good cheer. For hope remains while the company is true.
