When I was in engineering school, there were only a couple of black students in my program. They were pretty nice fellows as far as I could tell, but I remember being shocked by the questions they'd ask in private when they were trying to learn the subject matter. I was always polite and helpful with them, but I felt like they were very clearly mentally unsuitable for engineering work. I wondered how and why they got into the school to begin with. I felt sorry for them because I liked them, but they seemed to be hopelessly incompetent as students. One of them was actually from Nigeria and I remember thinking that I'd never want to be on or under a bridge that he would design.
